Page Tree Documentation
With the new version of Eden Platform released on July 6th 2009 we introduced a completely redesigned page tree interface for managing the pages within your website. These improvements make the page tree much more powerful and allow for a number of really helpful features like zooming, expanding and collapsing page sub-sections, and a more efficient layout so you can see more of your pages on the screen at any time.
Along with these improvements we've also made a few changes to how the interface works. This brief tutorial will show you how to use your new page tree to manage your website.
Locating a Page in Your Page Tree
First, click on any whitespace around the page tree. While holding your mouse button down, move the page tree pallet in any direction you'd like in order to locate any page within your website. If you have a very large page tree you might need to click, drag, and release the pallet and then click and drag several times again until you reach the desired position.
You can also use zooming and expanding and collapsing page sub-sections to help make this process more efficient. Also, you can use the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard to move the pallet to the left or right without using your mouse.
Adding a Page
Add a page by left-clicking once and selecting ‘add page' and then choosing a page type to use. (Note: the new page tree is activated with a left-click instead of a right-click. There is no need to right-click on the new page tree). A standard website page is called a content page.
You can add a top level website page by left-clicking on the ‘Eden Platform' box at the top of your page tree. You can add sub-level pages below a page by left-clicking on any page.
Moving a Page or Sub-Section
Click and drag any page in your page tree in order to move it to another position on the page tree. This works with every page except for the top level ‘Eden Platform' placeholder. As you drag a page beside other pages you will notice visual indicators (small vertical grey bars) that show you where the page would reside if you were to release it at that position. To move a page below another page you can position the page you are dragging directly over the top of the destination page and release it. Moving a page with sub-pages will move both the page and the sub-pages.
Editing a Page
First, locate the page you would like to edit in the page tree. Now, left-click once with your mouse to view the list of actions you can perform on the page. The list of actions remains the same as before with the exception of the new "rename" feature which lets you quickly name or rename a page in the page tree. If that page has not yet had a page title or menu text name set those fields will also be set to the name you enter.
Also from the menu you can choose to view or edit the page. You can add pages below the page in the tree or remove the page (and all sub-pages) from the tree. You can choose to change the page's settings or adjust its options including navigation, page type, and layout. You can also copy, cut, and paste the page as well.
Copying, Cutting, and Pasting Pages
A few advanced page functions allow you to more easily move pages or page sub-sections within your page tree as well as duplicate pages to save you time when you are creating pages with similar content.
To move a page first cut the page and then find the new location on the page tree where you would like it to go. Then left-click on the page that your page should be displayed below and select paste to complete the action. The pasted page will then become a sub-page of that page and will no longer exist at the previous position within the page tree. Cutting a page with sub-pages will also move all sub-pages.
You can duplicate a page by copying the page, finding the location on the page tree where you would like a copy of the page to reside, and then left-clicking on the page that your new page should be displayed below, and finally selecting paste to complete the action. The pasted page will become a new page at the new location and the page that you originally copied will remain intact at its previous location. The two pages are distinctly different pages now so making changes on one page will not affect the other page. Copying a page with sub-pages will only copy the page itself, not its sub-pages.
Zooming
Zoom deeper into the page tree by double-clicking in the whitespace to zoom in around the current position of your mouse. Control-double-click in the whitespace to zoom out.
The zoom level toolbar in the top left corner of the page tree will display your current depth. Clicking the plus and minus icons and clicking along the zoom level bar itself are also appropriate ways to control the depth of your view.
If you ever feel like you're getting lost within a large page tree you can click the reset button below the zoom toolbar to return to the original zoom level and view. The reset button does not change anything about your page tree or your website's pages, it simply resets the way you are viewing the tree.
Zooming all the way out when you first view your page tree might be a good way to help you most quickly find the page or section of your website that you intend to work on. Then, double-click near that area of the screen to zoom in deeper. Continue to double-click until you reach the zoom level that you desire.
You can also use your keyboard's + and - keys to zoom in and out without using the mouse. When using this method, for best results, first click and drag the tree pallet to center the area you would like to zoom in on. Then use the + and - keys to zoom in and out.
The zoom level is automatically reset each time you return to the page tree.
Expanding and Collapsing Page Sub-Sections
If a page of your website has sub-pages you can temporarily hide its sub-pages from your view by double-clicking on that page. Once the page has been collapsed a small red + on the lower right hand corner of the page icon reminds you that some pages are currently hidden there. Double clicking on that page will expand it once again.
Also, you can collapse or expand all website pages in one action for a more efficient view with a single click on the - All or + All icons. Clicking the reset button also expands all pages in addition to resetting the zoom level.
Expanding and collapsing sub-pages within the page tree view does not affect the pages themselves or how those pages display within the website's navigational menus.
All sub-pages are automatically expanded each time you return to the page tree.
